From a Quiet Italian Childhood to Cambridge: The Early Years of Sonia Gandhi

Long before she became one of the most influential figures in Indian politics, Sonia Gandhi was born Edvige Antonia Albina Maino on December 9, 1946, in a small village called Lusiana in the Veneto region of Italy. Raised in a traditional Roman Catholic family by her parents, Stefano and Paola Maino, she spent her youth and adolescence in Orbassano, a town near Turin.

Growing up in a working-class environment, her early life was worlds away from the public eye and the corridors of power she would later navigate. Described as shy, reserved, and studious, young Sonia enjoyed a quiet upbringing alongside her two sisters, completely unaware of the historic path awaiting her.

The Move to England and a Fateful Meeting

As a young woman eager to broaden her horizons, Sonia was sent abroad to master foreign languages. She settled near Cambridge, England, enrolling at a language school to study English.

It was during this modest student life in the mid-1960s that her world changed forever. While working part-time to support her studies, she crossed paths with Rajiv Gandhi, the grandson of India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who was then studying engineering at the University of Cambridge.

What began as a chance encounter blossomed into a deep romance. Despite coming from vastly different cultural backgrounds—a quiet Italian hometown versus the epicenter of India’s most famous political legacy—the pair formed an enduring bond.

Stepping Across Continents

After completing her studies and navigating the initial cultural and familial adjustments, Sonia Maino married Rajiv Gandhi in New Delhi in 1968.

Though she would eventually step into the public spotlight decades later following profound family tragedies, her youth was defined by the simple, classic dreams of a European art and language student—traits of humility and privacy that she carried with her even as she stepped onto the global stage.
